The Labyrinth began as part of the project Back to the future!, financed by the Swedish Research Council. And this web app is one result. The recordings were made by George Kentros at EMS in Stockholm during the spring of 2024.
Each measure can be repeated between 1 and 143 times according to a randomized pattern that is new every time. You can choose the length of the piece by using the menu at the top. The default is a randomized pattern which repeats between 1-13 times per measure.
The menu at the top contains all the parameters you need for playback. You can listen to the piece in any randomized configuration you choose, or click on the bar you would like to hear once all the files have loaded. You can also choose to slow down playback, and choose between different reverb options to fit whatever you want to hear at the moment. The default is a ”classical” concert hall, but both drier and (much) wetter acoustics can be chosen as you wish.
The bouncing magenta circle () shows the current beat.
The cyan rectangles () represent the number of bar repeats. Of course, you do not need to watch these, you can also just set the length of the piece and listen.
If you want to see the notes, great: just follow the magenta dots. You may also choose whether to have a pen stroke that follows the ball and creates a unique pattern each time the sequence begins again. Toggle the ”Ball,” ”Pen,” ”Boxes,” ”Score,” and ”Menu” buttons at the bottom to turn the different visual features on and off.
